As an avid DX'er and frequent user of the Northern California/Nevada DX spotting
network, I frequently end up (who doesn't?) searching through every resource at
my disposal for a QSL route. One of the options open to me is the "show/qsl"
command on the NCDXC packet net. We maintain a database--on the K6GO node--of
QSL routes for "interesting" stations. Quite often the message I get back
advises me that the information I want is on page x of issue y of the K6GO/xxx
QSL manager list. This message continues on to advise me that I can use
another command to find who the subscribers are...
This has always been a bit of an irritation, since I don't subscribe to this
particular newsletter. Just before the CQWW CW contest, the SYSOP sent out
a general announcement reminding all of the users of the importance of updating
the database when they got new information. I sent back the suggestion that
there should be a quid pro quo here: if we are to update his database with
new info, then he should open up access to the database rather than send what
I would call an advertisement for his newsletter. The response I got back
falls under the category of what we usually call an intense flame.
I would be interested in other's opinions on this. Does this constitute abuse
of the packet system, or am I being too literal in calling the SYSOP's message
an advertisement? I will readily concede that we all accept the ARRL code
practice sessions making a reference to QST, which costs.

FCC FORMS INTERNATIONAL UNIT
----------------------------
By: James Spinelli
The Federal Communications Commission announced on November 3rd
that it is forming an office to deal with international communications
issues.
The new unit, called the Office of International Communications,
is being established to deal with "the increasingly global character of
communications issues," the FCC said.
The office will help ensure the coordination and integration of
the commission's international policy activities. It will also ensure
that the FCC's international policies are uniform and consistent and
will serve as the focal point for the agency's representation before
international organizations.
FCC Chairman Alfred Sikes said the establishment of the office is
a prime example of how the FCC plans to promote the interests of the
American people in international communications and competitiveness.

Chage "fuddy duddy for" to "fascist" and "bad manners" to "freedom" and this
will be a more accurate description.
If I wanted to read the type of fidonet excretion posted to this news group of
late I could do so by dialing any number of local bulletin boards. Is it
really necessary to waste network bandwith transmitting such drivel?
No :{) intended.

Subject: Military Callsigns for PIZZA using Out-of-Band Mods, no-code, and ECPA
Message-ID: <474f52d5.15840@valley.UUCP>
What I do with MY modified HT is call up BIG_CHEEZY 02 (callsign for the local
Domino's base, land mobiles answer to PEPPERONI 01-99, maritime mobiles are
ANCHOVY 01-99) on 154.48 and order a pizza direct, thus avoiding the autopatch
question entirely. I only use the patch to avoid toll charges.
Of course, I understand that this communication is not protected under ECPA,
at least not until I can get the out-of-band mods to cover 800MHz (can anyone
send me those? Doesn't the ARRL keep a list?), but under the Comm Act of 1934,
anyone immoral enough to monitor this and divulge my favorite toppings is
toying with trouble...possible federal persec...uh...prost...uh...prosecution.
Is that such a crime? To quote a now-famous quote, "Who cares?" And why did
I have to learn CW to do this? The Domino's guy didn't.
Since I'm sure there are at least a couple of readers who won't get it,
:-) I T ' S A J O K E ! S A R C A S M ! :-)
I agree with Mark Bitterlich, someone is just trying to stir up the beehive,
let's all lighten up and move on. A little controversy and exchange of ideas
is great, but while these topics ARE a logical part of this newsgroup, things
have gotten too personal.
I see it now - in the dictionary, next to "anal retentive", there's a picture
of a 110 year old ham pounding out CW on his homebrew rock-bound rig...

AT LEAST get the *&^%*&%* SWL and monitoring stuff out of here! I
mentioned this before. There now is a rec.radio.shortwave and yet
this groups still gets deluged with frequency posts and other massive
volumes of SWL related stuff.
